Coach Keisha Young stokes the fire in her Lady Yellowjackets during a timeout against Rim of the World.

Colton, CA—Last Saturday, Colton played its first re-scheduled game at Rim of the World, and the result was not what they were looking for, losing 53-28. Tonight, the two teams had a rematch at Hubbs Gym, and the Lady Yellowjackets evened their season series, 35-25.

“The girls came in tonight only knowing that if they lost they would have to play Fontana,” said Coach Keisha Young. “At halftime they saw they could take second in the league if they won. Knowing they could place second in league if they won kept the fire burning.”

“It was a night of fire. They had it in them and they left it on the court.”

Madison Barrera led all players with 17 points and 22 rebounds. The team also got a huge contribution from freshman Savanna Govea, who was just activated from junior varsity with Reyna Chavez out for the remainder of the postseason. Govea scored 8 points, including 6 in the second quarter, and added 3 assists.

The game began with a tight first quarter, in which the two teams struggled back and forth. However, in the second quarter, the Yellowjackets went on a run and took a 17-11 lead into halftime.

After the half, Barrera and Emely Rodriguez punished Rim in the post, and went on 12-2 run to put the game out of reach. Rim fought back in the fourth, but it wasn’t enough.

Not only did the Yellowjackets end the season on a big win, it gave them a 2-3 league record (5-13 overall) in the Skyline League, putting them into a three-way tie with Rim of the World and Bloomington High, all of whom won and loss a game against each other.

With the Skyline League tournament scheduled to begin tomorrow, the tie was broken via coin flip.

Two coin flips were needed to determine seeding for the tournament. The first flip determined the fourth seed, which will be Rim of the World. The second flip determined which school would become the second and third seeds between Colton and Bloomington.

Colton won the toss, and will be the second seed in the Skyline League tournament, set to tip-off against Bloomington tomorrow evening at the Hubbs Gym. Time is still to be determined.

Notes

Devin Torrez had 23 points, including 9 clutch free throws during the fourth quarter to give Colton a 60-56 victory over Rim of the World at CHS. Gabriel Aparicio added 11, Josiah Diggs 9, and Aaron Valencia 7. Colton Suchil returned from injury and put up 4 points in limited minutes. The victory brings them to 1-5 in Skyline League and 4-11 overall. They will play tomorrow against Fontana in the opening game of the Skyline League tournament at 5:30 p.m.

Tomorrow evening at 5 p.m., coach Candice Tapia will join Reyna Chavez and others to petition the Colton City Council about improving cross conditions at the crosswalk on Rancho and West E Street. The team is encouraging community members to sign a petition demanding the City Council remedy the problem.
