Junior Morales had an excellent game against Carter High, winning his first-ever tie-breaker set.

Colton, CA—After back-to-back losses to Grand Terrace, Colton fought back this week to put together back-to-back wins by defeating the Carter Lions on Wednesday 12 sets to 6.

Colton started the game strong with the immediate forfeit of Carter’s third-ranked doubles. Even with the three victories gained by the forfeit, the men’s team persisted and dominated in the remainin sets.

With the absence of one of their third-ranked doubles players, Colton substituted Alexander Ponce to be paired with Andrew Ibarra. While Ponce had experience primarily as a third-ranked singles player, the step into doubles proved challenging.

Ibarra and Ponce nearly defeated Carter’s first-ranked doubles team, losing 4 to 6. Fortunately, they came together and beat the second-ranked doubles, winning 6-2.

The same can be said for the rest of Colton’s doubles, with Christopher Lopez/Xavier Rocha winning 6-0 and 6-1. Paired with the victories of Ivan Acosta/Nicholas Valtierra, winning 6-2, 6-1

After struggling against Carter’s #1-ranked single player, both Daniel Garcia and Junior Morales came back, winning the rest of their matches. With Morales winning his first-ever tiebreaker set against Carter’s #2-ranked player winning 7-5. However, Yulior Zamora would struggle against all of Carter’s singles, nearly coming back against the Lion’s third-highest single, but losing 2-6.

As we near closer and closer to the end of preseason, our men’s tennis team has gained a few victories under its belt. Surely, this is a sign of good things to come for the upcoming season.

Their next match is Thursday, Feb. 29 at Nogales High. Game time is 3:00 PM.
