Azael Hernandez starred both on the field and in the batters box in Coltons 11-6 victory over San Gorgonio.

San Bernardino, CA—Fueled by an eight-run sixth inning, the Colton Yellowjackets baseball team remained undefeated on the new season, coming from behind to defeat San Gorgonio 11-6 on Thursday night.

The Spartans got three runs in the second inning and two more in the third to take a 5-2 lead.

But the Yellowjackets remained poised and patient. They were rewarded in the sixth inning, when San Gorgonio’s relievers fell apart and gave up eight runs on a combination of hits, walks, and two players reaching base after being hit by pitches.

Azael Hernandez led Colton in this one, going 2-4, including a monster home run in the first inning that gave the Yellowjackets the early 1-0 edge. Daniel Segura went 2-3, but spent even more time on the base pads as he reached base after being both walked and hit by a pitch in the sixth.

On the mound, despite a rough third and fourth inning, Roman Torrero had a solid outing, giving up five runs on seven hits and racking up nine strikeouts against one walk. He was relieved by Adrian Avila, who pitched two and two-third excellent innings, shutting down San Gorgonio by holding them to a single hit.

With this win, Colton is 4-0-1 on the young season, and 2-0 in the San Gorgonio Tournament. Their next game will be Monday against Redlands East Valley. That game was rescheduled for Monday after being postponed on Feb. 20 due to rain. The game will be at Colton High. First pitch is 3:00 p.m.
