Colton, CA—With the emotions of Senior Night fueling their hearts and feet, the Colton Yellowjackets faced the Summit Skyhawks last night at Memorial Stadium. It was a hard fought, defensive battle between league rivals, but the Yellowjackets finished the night with the win, defeating the Skyhawks 1-0.

The last time these two teams faced each other, on January 10, the game ended in a 1-1 tie. Colton was wracked by COVID, only suiting up 12 of their 20 player roster. This time around, at full strength, Colton’s defense was prepared for the rematch.

Anna Bailey scored the Yellowjackets only goal at 38:09 of the second half when she broke free of the Summit defense on an incredible outlet pass from goalie Zamantha Moctezuma. Bailey headed the bounce into her path, got some space and took on Summit’s goalkeeper for the dramatic score.

On the defensive end, Moctezuma finished with two timely saves, and the Colton midfield, led by senior Aracely Reyes, held Summit to only 7 shots on goal for the game.

“We definitely worked really hard,” Reyes said. “You can tell we left it all on the field today.”

Coach Manny Flores had a similar take on the game. “I was proud of their play. They played hard from minute one.”

The victory was a sweet capper on an emotional evening that saw the celebration of the Yellowjacket’s six seniors: Emma Arroyo, Justine Estrada, Diana Fernandez, Bibiana Gonzalez, Zamantha Moctezuma Ibarra, and Aracely Reyes. Each senior was accompanied by proud family and friends as they walked to the 50-yard line, where they were greeted with photos and gift baskets by their underclassmen teammates.

Reyes was already reflecting on the significance of this victory. “It meant so much because it was our Senior Night. I won’t forget this game.”
