Colton, CA—The Colton Yellowjacket volleyball team put their three-match skid behind them today with a decisive preseason victory over the Canyon Springs Cougars, three games to none.

Anchored by senior setter Marissa Herrera with 10 assists, eight digs, and one kill, the Yellowjackets shook off a few early mistakes en route to winning three straight games, 25-21, 25-22, and 25-20.

In the first game, the Yellowjackets took an early lead, but the Cougars fought back on the strength of Shakiyah Davis’ thunder kills. Undaunted, the Yellowjackets put together a late game run as outside hitter Leslie Venegas scored two of her three kills for the match.

The Cougars came out strong in the second game, but the Yellowjackets rallied. Senior libero Elena Torrero kept stopping the Cougar attack with 10 digs. Even more essential was the floor leadership she and fellow senior Karime Parra showed in getting their group refocused. They brought their teammates together and kept the tone loose and fun.

The third game was never really in doubt. The 1-4 Cougars began to get discouraged, and after being on the losing end of a few lengthy volleys, they caved.

“We did a few things as far as attacking,” assistant coach Anthony Wade said after the game. “We just executed.”

As the girls celebrated the much-needed victory, head coach Sarah Vazquez was more reserved and evaluative. While she was excited about the team’s improved communication and chemistry, she still saw lots of room for improvement. “I gave them a B,” she said. “Hopefully tomorrow is an A.”

Tomorrow, the Lady Yellowjackets take on Indian Springs High School at the Hubbs Gym.
