Obama, Philippines president spar in war of words

Joshua Sandoval, Reporter

President Obama has been called a number of things in his years in office. To one particular individual, he’s the son of a whore. That individual is none other than the Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte.

What could have led to such controversial word play amongst the leaders of the world? A controversial topic of course, drugs. Not just the drugs though, it’s the war on drugs happening right now in the Philippines. It’s a violent one at that, Philippine President Duterte issued a type of “self justice” system that allows civilians to strike down and kill anyone suspected to have relations with illegal drugs. This has raised some eyebrows in the U.N., with them coming out and calling this an act against human rights. Obama claimed that he’ll see to the issue soon enough in a meeting with the Philippine President. Duarte didn’t particularly like that.

After stating that he “Has no master other than the Filipino people,” he then went on to call Obama a “Son of a whore.” This wouldn’t be the first time the Philippine President used such colourful language–he’s once called the United States ambassador a “Gay son of a B*tch”. He went as far as to cuss out the Pope for causing traffic when he visited the country.

Though soon enough he was forced to apologize for each incident, and soon enough for this one too. This time it was different though. He publicly apologized for the harmful statement towards Obama on his own. Before he could do so though, Obama said that the meeting would be called off. Despite this, Obama  and Duarte went through with the meeting anyways. After all the turmoil that both world leaders went through, the two were finally able to shake hands on Wednesday.
