Colton, CA—Colton students found themselves a little confused last Thursday morning when they were given bracelets to attend the Winter Pep Rally during . . . second period?
Typically, pep rallies are held in the middle, or towards the end of the school day. However, for this year’s Valentine’s themed rally, which celebrated the achievements of the Yellowjackets’ winter sports teams, the decision was made to hold it early in the day.
According to Alexandra Buskirk, ASB director, the change in time was due to the number of events being coordinated in the Hubbs gym, like cheerleading practice as they prepared to compete in the weekend’s USA Nationals event at the Anaheim Convention Center.
The time change didn’t matter, because during second period on Feb. 15, Colton’s High’s ASB and Renaissance put on a fantastic Valentine’s themed pep rally.
“The rally was pretty exciting,” said senior Christopher Lopez-Herrera. “It showed a lot of emphasis on the champions of winter sports like girls basketball and girls soccer.”
To start off, senior Natalie Diaz sang the national anthem as NJROTC presented colors. A number of school programs showcased their talents. Competition and sideline cheer embodied school spirit. Dance team did a tribute to Britney Spears. And band . . . danced. The musical ensemble put together an energetic dance to go along with their spirited musical performance.
Representatives from all of the winter sports introduced their teams, including both boys and girls basketball and soccer teams, and wrestling. The cheers swelled as the girls basketball and soccer teams came out to center court, both ready to participate in the weekend’s CIF final four games.
Senior Ivan Acosta was proud of what he saw at the rally. “It was amazing to watch the performances of the dance team, the cheer team, and all sports that won league and are currently playing in CIF. It really shows how our school has progressed over the years.”
ASB also introduced a few games, such as “Better Together” and “Musical Chairs.” Students from all classes went against each other, displaying friendly rivalry.
“I really enjoyed playing musical chairs,” said sophomore Dejah Salvato. “I had a fun time and loved the Valentine’s Day theme.”
With Colton’s recent successes both on the field and in the classroom, this was bound to be a pep rally packed with pride. It lived up to the hype.
