Colton High Interact Club students, led by Christian Orellana, brought awareness to human rights violations perpetuated in Uganda by Joseph Kony in 2012.

Colton High School opened in 1895. It is one of the oldest high schools in the Inland Empire. In this daily feature, we celebrate Colton High’s rich history.

In April 2012, Colton High’s Interact Club, in collaboration with the Pepper Bough, worked to bring awareness to the human rights atrocities perpetrated by Joseph Kony and his Lord’s Resistance Army in the nation of Uganda. After watching a viral video circulated by an organization called Invisible Children, Interact Club president Christian Orellana worked to bring the Kony 2012 movement to Colton.

Interact Club and the Pepper Bough put together an awareness table at the schoolwide Awareness Fair, inviting students to sign up to help join the “Cover the Night” campaign. Over 50 students signed up, of which 20 showed up to help Interact and the Pepper Bough team paper the surrounding Colton and Grand Terrace communities with informative flyers and posters.

“Taking initiative is like a motto of mine,” Orellana shared with the Pepper Bough. “If I see a cause or something that needs to be done, I do it. With this Kony 2012 campaign, I felt inspired to go beyond just partaking in a worldwide event; I wanted to lead it! I want to change the world for the better, but why not start with my community? Why not start in high school?”
