Colton, CA—The Colton Yellowjackets kept their second game of the season close.

For the spectators at the baseball field, maybe a little too close. In their first game of the annual San Gorgonio tournament, Colton hosted Lancaster High. Due to a lack of lighting on the varsity baseball field, the game was called a tie, 3-3.

The game started with the Yellowjackets scoring early on a double from Daniel Segura. This would be their only run until the third inning when Azael Hernandez hit an RBI single for Colton’s second run.

With great defense from both teams, the 4th inning was nothing but a battle to see which pitcher would be hit. Colton blinked first, giving up a run in the 5th inning, bringing the score to 2-1.

With a comeback in their sights, Lancaster stranded runners on second and third in the sixth inning. However, Colton wasn’t able to take advantage in the bottom of the sixth.

In the 7th inning Lancaster scored two runs, going up 3-2. Colton fought back in the bottom of the 7th, tying the game 3-3.

However, the defensive game went long and as the sun set and the shadows darkened, the game became too unsafe to play. Lights installed on the inferior JV field were on and there was talk to move the game, but the smaller dimensions and condition of the field made the unprecedented decision of ending a baseball game in a tie reality.

Opening pitch was thrown by the girls varsity basketball team who are celebrating an unprecedented run in school history as they prepare to play Grand Terrace High in the CIF quarterfinals on Feb. 14. Mayra Morales threw the pitch on behalf of the team.

Colton is now 2-0-1 on the season. Their next game is at home against Rim of the World on Thurs., Feb. 15 at 3 p.m. Originally the game was scheduled to play at Rim of the World High School, but with the recent snowstorms, the Rim baseball field has become unplayable. The game is Colton’s second in the San G baseball tournament.

Mark Rodriguez, Staff Writer
Mark Rodriguez is a sophomore at Colton High School. Other than the fact he is taller than you would expect a 15-year old to be, he's a pretty average high school kid. He tends to get out of line, but he somehow manages to fix that (sometimes). He's "smart" but struggles because of a lack of effort. However, when he tries, he can do excellent work (according to some sources). He likes to make people laugh and smile, but somehow he still struggles to talk to people. This is Mark's second year writing for the Pepper Bough.
