Colton, CA—On Tuesday, with first place in the San Andreas league on the line, girls soccer played their last league match of the season against San Gorgonio. Colton needed a victory and that’s what they got, defeating the Spartans 4-2 to win the league title.
Adalyn Moreno scored two goals in the victory, with additional goals by captains Melanie Bravo and Anna Bailey. Bailey and Bianca Soto finished the game with two assists apiece.
Despite the victory, Bravo saw room for improvement. “There was many different struggles, but today, we didn’t play our worst but we didn’t play our best.”
Colton started the game aggressive and stayed that way, dominating time of possession, and shutting out the Spartans in the first half. Five minutes into the first half Adalyn Moreno scored her first goal on an assist from Bailey.
Moreno wasn’t done, however, putting the team up 2-0 with the assist of Bianca Soto at 19:21 of the first half.
Even with the lead, the Yellowjackets continued putting on the pressure, getting another goal from Melanie Bravo on the assist of Bailey near the end of the half.
After halftime, San Gorgonio fought back, getting their first goal early in the second half. There was also a foul midway through the half that gave the Spartans another score, putting the game at 3-2.
However, Bailey put the game out of reach with a goal in the last three minutes on the assist from Soto.
With this victory, the Yellowjackets have sole possession of first place in the San Andreas league, ensuring them the number one seed in next week’s league tournament. Games will be next Tuesday and Thursday at home. Opponents are still to be determined.
