The ladies tennis team gets excited about the possibility of a championship before their match against San Gorgonio.

San Bernardino, CA—For the first time in school history, Colton High’s girls’ tennis team was crowned San Andreas league champions yesterday after defeating San Gorgonio, 17-1.

This season, Colton has dominated the San Andreas league, holding an undefeated record against their competition. The only losses sustained have been against non-league higher division opponents, many of whom they nearly defeated.

The girls are proud of their accomplishments this season.

“It feels amazing,” said Shantel Marentes about winning the league title. “Me and my teammates, we’ve all worked so hard to get to this point. This year we felt amazing. We felt like we could do anything.”

“One of our teammates said that this season was meant to be,” added Natalie Diaz. “It really stuck with me because over like 100 years of hard work and dedication, like this year was our season.”

Against San Gorgonio, the Yellowjackets were dominant. Marentes (6-3, 6-0, 6-0), Juliette Echauregui (7-5, 6-0, 6-0) and Hazel Ramirez Macias (6-2, 6-0, 6-1) swept their singles sets. And the three doubles teams of Valeria Pech and Emily Melgarejo (6-4, 6-1, 6-1), Ashley Galvan and Katia Razo (2-6, 6-0, 6-0), and Natalie Diaz and Hailey Dubon (6-3, 6-0, 6-0) went 8-1 against the Spartans.

After a non-league match against Woodcrest Christian tomorrow to finish up the regular season schedule, the girls’ tennis team will prepare for league prelims on Oct. 23, and Arrowhead Athletic Conference finals on Oct. 25. After that, a date with CIF awaits.
