Arroyo Valley defeated the Yellowjackets in straight sets on Sept. 23.

Colton, CA—After losing their last four matches, including two league games, the Yellowjackets needed something to go right. Unfortunately, that wasn’t in the cards on Friday, when they played against league rivals Arroyo Valley, who defeated Colton in straight sets, 3-0 (5-25, 21-25, 14-25).

“We all just kept going for the same ball, and we just made mistakes,” said Grace Osueke.

“We were kind of fighting ourselves,” Coach Wade added.

For this game, the Yellowjackets were without opposite hitter Joleena Silberman, which certainly hurt their attack on the front line as well as their service game. Kiara Verdin stepped up with 12 attacks, 1 kill, leading the team on offense.

On the defense, Jennifer Amaral continued her strong season, tallying 23 service receptions and 14 digs.

The first set was tough from the start, with the team getting confused on rotations as it tried to bring more energy. Arroyo took an early lead and never looked back, winning the set 25-5. It was a devastating result for a team already struggling to find confidence and trust.

The second set was closer, as Colton fought back until Arroyo finished strong with a 25-21 advantage. Eventually Arroyo Valley cruised to a 25-14 third set victory.

Based on their struggles, it seems that the Yellowjackets still have a lot to figure out before their next game at Jurupa Hills on Sept. 28.
