NXT Live Returns to the IE and Steals the Show
May 12, 2017
Cinco De Mayo was not only for the all night drinking parties but it was also the night for some WWE wrestling. Hosted in the Riverside Municipal Auditorium for the second time in a span of five months, the crowd was electric to see the future stars compete. From high-flying luchador offense to hard-knock brawling, the superstars put everything on the line. Multiple matches throughout the night were to be considered to be “match of the night” but nothing compared to the awesome championship main event featuring the NXT Champion Bobby Roode and the Perfect Ten Tye Dillinger.
The event kicked off with a fiesta as NXT superstar No Way Jose took on newcomer Kona Reeves to get the crowd on their feet, singing his theme song and even joining Jose in a conga line throughout the building. Once the bell rang, the fiesta was put on hold and then began the action. Jose would then gain the victory with his patented baseball pitch signature move. After the match, the Venezuelan Sensation kept the party going as he danced the night away with the Riverside audience.
From an Cinco De Mayo fiesta to “Purple Rain”, the crowd witnessed the Velveteen Dream Patrick Clark faceoff against the NXT veteran in Hideo Itami, who has been with the brand for well over two years. Those two faced off in a match where different styles clashed to determine who would carry momentum onto their upcoming pay-per-view, NXT TakeOver: Chicago. Although the crowd was crazy for Purple Rain, the longtime veteran Itami gained the win with his Go To Sleep (GTS) finishing move.
Once the singles competition was done, came some tag team action as fan-favorite tag team #DIY’s Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa faced the unique combination of Riddick Moss and Tino Sabbatelli, otherwise known as The Elite Athletes. As the crowd went crazy over both members of #DIY individually, the match started with ease. Back-and-forth, both teams looked to seek retribution over one another. But it wasn’t until the end where Riverside saw the beloved team of Gargano and Ciampa prevail in dominant fashion.
Transitioning from tag team wrestling to women’s wrestling, the people at the RMA witnessed a women’s tag team match between the NXT Women’s Champion Asuka and her mystery partner in the “Mysterious” Lacey Evans who faced the strong duo in Sonya Deville and Mandy Rose, who were both competitors on the 2015 edition of WWE’s groundbreaking recruitment reality show, Tough Enough. Those two teams showed how strong, fierce, and powerful women’s wrestling really was as they tore the house down with their battle. However in the end, it was the champion who got her team the win in an convincing way.
Finally, in the main event, the match was set for championship gold as the challenger Tye Dillinger looked to win the covenant prize over the current champion, Bobby Roode in his farewell tour from NXT, heading towards the main roster to SmackDown Live. The highly anticipated dream match took place in a setting where it felt like an actual pay-per-view event as the crowd became hooked on the exchange between the two stars. After a colossal main event, the match ended in a low-blow cheat shot by Roode and came out victorious.
It was truly a “night to remember” passe. Being only the second visit to the Inland Empire, NXT proved once again how they made the feeling of an live non-televised event turn into the feel of a televised show. From crowd interactions to the show itself, there was no doubt in anyone in attendance that night that it was the best show ever seen.
