Boys Baseball loses Close Battle with Fontana
May 16, 2016
On Wednesday May 11th, the varsity baseball team had taken a lost against the Fontana Steelers, leaving Fontana High with the debt. Before the game, assistant head coach Mr. Michael Esquivel mentioned, “I feel very good coming into this game against Fontana, we have a senior pitcher Alex Mckeenan [who] has been very good on the mound. He gives us a lot of strong innings, goes deep into the game and I think if he is on like he normally is we should come out on top today.” Esquivel also mentions in expectations for the team in the game, “I expect them to play hard and to hustle at all times, to not leave the field with any regrets, and to make sure that they do all they can to be successful on the field. That’s during practice not only on field but off the field as well”. Knowing the varsity only has two games left assistant head coach, Mr. Esquivel mentions, “It is bittersweet, coaching is a lot of hours but its fun. I am excited for these last couple games but it is bitter because one gets to be around the boys and it’s exciting that will get a little more time with my family”
Senior Ricardo Aguirre is currently a utility, which means he can several positions, but his main position is center field. Aguirre mentions his game plan on facing the Steelers, “I feel like we need to come on strong with energy for 7 innings without giving up on ourselves.” When Aguirre was little, he fell in love with the sport after seeing his inspiration, Troy Tulowitzki of the Toronto Blue Jays play back when he was little. Before a game, Aguirre would watch old videos of pros when they played High school baseball, and watched their interviews. It made him feel confident about himself that anything is possible.
The game started out with an intense beginning as the Yellow Jackets had a scoring battle for the first four innings. When the fourth inning approached, the Steelers stole the show as went on two score 6 more points in a tied game at two a piece. The Jackets would try to battle back with contributions from Seniors McKeenan Tyler Bynum, scoring on each side. However that battle turned into a one-sided loss as the score quickly became 8-6.
After the game, Ricardo Aguirre mentioned about his performance saying, “I made a lot of mistakes, we did horrible as a team. No one is an individual. Lack of chemistry.” He also mentions, “I will be ready to ball out on my last game because it is my senior year of course. I’m going to be ready.” He adds, “I feel like it’s going to come out well, I know my team is going to ball out for us seniors. I feel really good about my last game”.
