It’s tough being a new teacher but try being a first year coach for the Girl’s Varsity Volleyball team as well. That is what U.S. and World History teacher Camille Butts has done.
I interviewed Coach Butts and asked her questions about her life and her time here at Colton.
Nathan: How long have you been at Colton High School?
Coach Butts: I have been here a year and 10 days.
Nathan: What high school and college did you attend?
Coach Butts: I went to Ontario High School and Scripps College in Claremont.
Nathan: What sports did you play?
Coach Butts: I played volleyball and track.
Nathan: Did your family play sports? If so what sports?
Coach Butts: My dad was an Olympic track and field athlete and played football in college.
Nathan: What made you decide to Coach Volleyball?
Coach Butts: Her coaches motivated her and I liked playing volleyball. The merging of my two passions seemed like a perfect fit.
Nathan: Tell me about your season and your players and your best and worst game.
Coach Butts: One more league match and we will go to CIF*. Getting used to the girls and them getting used to me. *(Colton won the game, but the team lost the first playoff game. The rest is undetermined at this time.)
Nathan: What have you taught your athletes and what have they taught you?
Coach Butts: To teach my athletes to have confidence, in themselves as athletes, students, people and everything. They taught me to have more Colton Pride, by singing the Alma Mater on the way home from away games.
It was a pleasure interviewing Coach Butts and I wish her and the team the best of luck for the rest of their season.
