We shouldn’t have to hear about a shooting threat on Instagram

Is it really the school’s choice whether or not to put our lives at risk?

Into the first full week of October all seemed normal until there was an apparent threat written on the stall of a restroom convincing us at Colton High School that someone was planning a school shooting on Friday October 9th. How did the school and staff react to this threat? They chose to keep this news a secret from the students deeming that this threat wasn’t high enough to cause panic.

But who came up with that decision? Was it theirs or ours? Was choosing to allow school to continue on that day, putting our lives at risk without giving us a warning, the prudent course of action?

I don’t believe this decision was right. Administration should’ve told students so we would have the choice of putting our own lives in danger if we chose too. What would’ve happened if the school knew and the word didn’t get out and everyone came and the shooting really did happen? Lives that could have been saved by simply telling us would’ve been lost. Luckily, no shooting happened. Colton High School literally dodged a bullet that day. But for the next time, maybe the powers that run things around here might want to think about letting the students in on the possible dangers of attending school on any given day. After all, we’re the reason this school is here, right?
