Last year, the popular toy company Mattel released a Mexican Barbie Doll. But what seems to be catching Mexican immigrants is that this Barbie has a passport and is carrying a Chihuahua. Would you find a Mexican Barbie Doll offensive?
It’s not so offensive to me and I’m Latin-American. It’s just a Mexican Barbie doll that has a passport and is carrying a Chihuahua.
A passport is a resemblance of traveling to different places around the world. Best believe if the Barbie Doll had a green card, immigrants would find it very offensive. Now that would be something Mexicans would be arguing about. Mattel factories have been making cultural dolls for years, and every doll has come with a passport that represents the country which they come from. The Mexican Barbie Doll is just another addition to their “The Dolls of the World” collection. Mattel has made plenty of cultural Barbie Dolls. It’s not a stereotype; it’s an educational product that is trying to teach kids about their history.
This product is now out to the public, and this is a beautiful idea to recognize each country’s cultures. It’s also a great way to discuss and teach children about the world’s history.
