Polar bears have been vulnerable to mass extinction for many years, due to the major climate changes that have been occurring. They inhabit most of the Arctic Circle, but with a massive oil drilling plan assembled by the gasoline company Shell, their lives are being put at an even greater risk of danger. The Obama Administration has already given the go-ahead to begin this summer’s drilling plan off the coastline of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.
Just last year, Shell was granted approval to execute an exploratory deepwater drilling operation in one of the world’s most delicate ecosystems. This month, federal regulators may or may not commend Shell’s cleanup response plan in this particular area that subsequently, is over a thousand miles from any modern ports.
“The Arctic is the absolute last wild ocean on the planet. Its waters and the abundant life they support are simply too sensitive to be drilled- especially since neither the oil industry, nor scientists have identified a proven way to contain or clean up a spill in the Arctic’s extreme conditions,” says Chuck Clusen, Alaska Project Director with the Natural Resources Defense Council, in an official press release.
If an oil spill occurs at any moment of this operation , it could envelop the coast of the Arctic Refuge with an irremovable layer of toxic oil, for generations to come. It would be virtually impossible to expunge oil from the countless other marine wildlife that call the arctic “home”, and permanently destroy the nesting grounds of the polar bears.
