For the past few months, protesters have been planning to go to Wall Street and protest against the financial system that the protestors believe advocates the rich at the expense of the ordinary people of this nation. This is now known as the Occupy Wall Street movement, and it is not only happening in New York City, but rather places all over the United States. Citizens are now revolting and showing their government what they would like to see changed and hope by doing these protests they will be able to see that change.
Occupy Wall Street started out with activists who were tired of corporations’ greed, the inequality in our social structure and corporations taking over the democratic process. The original idea was conceived when the people in Egypt who began protesting against their government and over threw President Hosni Mubarak, which inspired the Occupy Wall Street activists to do the same.
They proclaim themselves as being, “(A) leaderless resistance movement with people of many colors, genders and political persuasions. The one thing we all have in common is that we are the 99 percent that will no longer tolerate the greed and corruption of the one percent.”
The other “Occupy” movements are not just about the financial injustice, but also the opposition of nuclear power, political corruption and many other issues within our country. The protesters have received a lot of media attention, which has grabbed the attention of both the Democratic and Republican parties who both have agreed that the movement will change the public debate. One thing is certain, people are no longer going to stay quiet and many changes are bound to be made in this country.
