Colton, CA—Beginning from Tuesday Sept. 10, all CJUSD schools have school canceled for the remainder of the week due to the poor air quality caused by the Line and Bridge fires which are both currently a State of Emergency.
The Line fire began on Friday and was proclaimed a state of emergency by Saturday, now at over 34,000 acres with 14% containment while the Bridge Fire began on Tuesday, and was proclaimed a state of Emergency on Wednesday, spreading over 48,000 acres with 0% containment being the largest current wildfire in California.
Some of the other districts that are affected by the fire, closing for the week, include: Rialto Unified, Redlands Unified, Yucaipa-Calimesa Unified, Rim Unified, and San Bernardino City Unified.
Meals will continue to be provided for CJUSD students for the rest of the week (make sure to know your student ID number), starting again at 10am-12pm on Thursday located at Joe Baca Middle School. For additional resources you can call 211 if you require more support.
Also for CJUSD in particular, all extra-curricular activities as well as all athletic activities will also be canceled for the week which includes the Colton vs Grand Terrace Football game that was scheduled on Friday.
With the football game canceled, Colton High is unlikely to face their rivals for the rest of the season due to having different schedules. However, even with the unfortunate circumstances Colton High Senior Football Captain Ryan Villalpando stated, “It is what it is. If there is a way to reschedule, make it happen and we’ll be ready.”
Currently Colton High’s bye week is scheduled for Sept. 27 while Grand Terraces bye is scheduled for Sept 20. Athletic Director and Varsity Football Coach Ray Rodriguez stated, “We play the cards that are dealt to us. It’s unfortunate the game got canceled but with us now knowing this we can move forward and get ready to host a good Rim of the World team that is coming down the hill next week.”
