Colton,CA—On August 16, Colton High School hosted their annual PBIS assembly. The assembly was held during 2nd period. After a small hiccup with the air conditioner at the Whitmer auditorium on Aug. 2 postponed the original event, CHS came back stronger than ever, putting together a lively show to introduce students to school administration and review the school’s PBIS expectations.
The CHS Hip-Hop Dance Club helped sponsor the event. ASB, Link Crew, and Renaissance also played a part in helping run the show. This provided opportunities to introduce themselves to the school in order to let the student body know the roles they play on campus.
“We hosted the PBIS assembly to have a little bit of a twist and wanted it to make it fun for the students and to have a memorable year,” said senior Emily Parada, a member of the Hip-Hop Club.
The event was for the students to meet school administrators since most don’t get an opportunity to interact with them. In addition to principal John Abbott, students were introduced to assistant principal Debbi Villegas and new APs Erica MacDonald and Daniele Moatakaf. Each addressed different sets of expectations, including behaviors and what students need to be able to graduate and how many credits they are supposed to have at each grade level.
“Doing something like this is helpful to our new administration and gives them an opportunity to be on stage for our students,” said Learning Specialist Danielle Fernandez.
Along with the Hip-Hop Club, the CHS choir performed the school’s Alma Mater, and the cheer team got the crowd riled up with a new routine. “I found the choir class to be the most entertaining at the assembly,” said senior Nathan Perez.
Hip-Hop Club held a “Swag Raffle” for a chance to get a picture with Yogi, the school mascot. Link Crew played a game called pie dice, where the losing team took a pie to the face. Senior Leland Trejo said, ”My favorite part of the assembly is when one of the participants got pied in the face.”
After the assembly, Hip-Hop Club hosted an ice cream fundraiser during lunch, giving students time to buy ice cream and refresh themselves in the day’s summer heat.
