Want to learn all about cultures? A new class coming may be right up your alley.
Colton High AP World, World Religions, and World History teacher, Russell Levine, will be teaching a brand new History course next year– AP Human Geography, and it is intended for 9th-12th graders alike, but is recommended for 9th graders as a “good course to prepare students for AP World History,” says Levine. “It looks more at cultural history than World History,” “things like relationships with countries, foods, religion, how geography relates to dress or even music.”
This is by no means a typical history course, this is course that will study geography but it also looks at history from a more “social aspect,” and goes over modern day issues that we face today. Among the subjects you will study in this course there is the spread of diseases such as the Black Plague or SARS as a byproduct of cultures interacting, how the past can help resolve issues of today, the environmental impact we’ve had on the earth over the years (air pollution, water pollution, and DDT infected birds), and many more. “Students who are interested in culture or world environment would enjoy this class.”
This is a full year course, recommended for students hoping to enroll in AP World History, or students of any grade looking for a new, fresh, and interesting take on History. This class will also help encourage tolerance and understanding throughout the learning process. Levine recommends the class to “kids with any future History classes.” To sign up for the class, just ask your counselor, the class will fit into the regular 6 period day.
