Relay for life helps raise awareness for cancer

The Relay for Life is coming, symbolized by the purple ribbons to make the community aware that it’s coming. Purple is also the universal color that represents all cancers and cancer survivors. The race is to be held Saturday May 18th on the Colton High campus. This is Colton’s ninth year doing the relay since it started back in 1985 in Tacoma, Washington track. Since then, Relay For Life has become the American Cancer Society’s single largest activity.

The relay is separated into teams–there are 53 teams and over 1,000 participants registered in the relay so far. Colton’s team (or “Dream Team” as they like to call it) consists of 95 people; from these 95 there are 16 staff members, ten students, one school board member, four other district staff members, and the rest of their team is family and friends and their Co-workers. Ages range from four years old to 86 years old. Also on this Dream Team are seven registered cancer survivors.

The relay is expecting to have a big turn out trying to rake in $90,000 for the ACS this year in a 24-hour period. With the gates opening at 8:00 a.m., and the events beginning at 9:00 and not ending until 9:00 a.m. the next day, hopefully the societies goals will be met. There is going to be many fun events that are worth watching. Definitely a must go.

Our Goal

Recently, the CHS Publications Department experienced a major theft as over $20,000 in photography equipment was stolen from our studio over Spring Break. This included all cameras. Any amount you donate will help rebuild our program. Thank you!
