The AVID stole ceremony on Apri. 26th was a night of tears, gifts, and accomplishments, with senior Uriel Gonzalez receiving the AVID tutor scholarship.
The stoles are a representation of the two or more years each was a part of the AVID program. All their hard work it took to get them to where they are now, graduating and going off to college, lead up to this.
Each AVID senior was told to choose a presenter that has now only inspired them but also pushed them to follow their dreams and archive their goals. Some chose teachers or coaches and even family members. A lot of the teachers who were chosen were old middle school and even elementary school teachers who had inspired the students to keep going and never stop trying.
Before being presented with their stoles the students had to have prepared a thank you speech for their presenter and present them with a tank you gift. And every one of the speeches was genuine and heartfelt in its own way. Several of the students broke out in tears while trying to recite their speech because of the level of high emotions the night brought.
During the ceremony a slide show was being displayed for the audience to see. Each slide was personally designed by the senior on it. The slides showed where each student would go off to college after high school, how many years they’ve been in AVID, a quote and however many pictures of themselves and all the memories they’ve made as an AVID family.
And as a family they awarded Uriel Gonzalez the AVID tutor scholarship that included a backpack full of anything that might be needed on his first day of college and a $50 gift card. The winner was chosen anonymously so that the AVID tutors wouldn’t just pick a student who they all like.
As the ceremony came to a close the 2013 avid senior class family, the students all got up and gave AVID teacher Peter Goldkorn a standing ovation. This was a sign of respect and gratitude for all the things he has done to aid each and every one of them in their success. Everyone went on to celebrate with cupcakes and fruit punch set up in the cafeteria after and an emotional ending. And not to forget a special thanks to the AVID freshman, sophomore, and junior class for helping with the entire set up of the evening.
This was an emotional even for most of the seniors in avid. Not only because this is one step closer to graduation but because it marks the end of their avid careers.
Congratulations avid senior class of 2013!
