Colton has a new Athletic Director this year, former Science teacher Scott Sunderland. In a recent interview, Sunderland chatted about a variety of topics, including what he plans to bring to his new position.
Why did you apply for the Athletic Director position?
Sunderland: It’s something I have been interested in doing all my life. Sports have always been a big part of my life. My Dad and my brother were both Athletic Directors.
Why here at Colton High?
Sunderland: Colton reminds me of the Mid-West, reminds me of the town where I grew up. There’s a big interest in sport, cultures, and ideals of community. There’s lots of tradition and I really like the small town atmosphere.
What did you do before you took this job?
Sunderland: I was an 11th grade science teacher for eleven years and girls basketball coach for 5 years.
How was the transition from being a teacher to A.D.?
Sunderland: It’s different. So many people think I just sit around. I am just as busy and or busier than when I was a teacher. I am enjoying being the athletic director.
What is the best and worst part of being an Athletic Director?
Sunderland: The best part is no longer seeing the negative in students, but seeing the positive in them. Dealing with the budget cuts is the worst part.
Did you play sports in high school?
Sunderland: I played three sports, football, basketball, and track. I was Athlete of the Year at 29 Palms High School.
Are you married? Do you have children?
Sunderland: I have been married 6 years and have 1 ½ year old twins and a 3 year old.
What do they think about you doing this job?
Sunderland: My wife found out it has more hours than coaching. My brothers and sisters kind of knew I was going there.
What are your hobbies?
Sunderland: I used to collect sports cards and I like to play Texas Hold’Em.
What do you want people to know about you, that they don’t know already?
Sunderland: I come from a large family, two sisters and four brothers. Academics are a huge deal in my family. Five of my siblings have college degrees and most are honor students. My brother was on Jeopardy and played two days. Finally, I am not as mean as I come off to be.
