It’s been many years since Chauncey Hollis has set foot on the grounds of Colton High. Graduating in 2005 from our very own school, Hollis, better known as “Hit-Boy” in the hip-hop world, now has clients including modern day successes such as Lil’ Wayne, Eminem, Jay-Z, and Kanye West, under his belt. Hollis used to idly sit, rapping at a lunch table with friends, and has now gone on to produce singles you hear on the radio, including 2-time platinum hit, “Drop the World”. Hollis is living proof that even people from small towns, including people from here in Colton, can achieve whatever they put their minds to, if they truly have the ambition and motivation to do so, and with ASB making his appearance possible, Hollis visited the 2012 seniors in the Hubbs Gym, on the last day of Senior Week, to pay tribute to his alma mater, as well as inspire the students in the audience to strive to achieve their goals, no matter how big they are.The former alum turned successful hip hop producer stepped aside from the cheering students for a short interview with the Pepper Bough:
How does it feel to be back at your alma mater?
I’m excited. I’m really happy to be back.
Has anything changed drastically?
Not really! It’s been 10 years since I started, and everything pretty much looks the same.
You used to play basketball?
Just my first year, Freshman year. I’m glad I did.
What was your favorite subject in school?
English?
Favorite memory while attending the school?
Rapping at lunch time.
Is this where Surf Club started?
Surf Club started after high school, when I lived in Fontana.
You just finished working with ASAP Rocky. How was it?
He’s a really good friend. It’s cool because he’s the youngest rapper, and I’m the youngest producer, so it’s just dope.
Is “Goldie” the only thing you two worked on while in the studio?
We worked on more music as well, that will be heard soon.
Nicki Minaj, ASAP Rocky, Kanye West; 2012 is looking good so far. Anyone else you’re working with at the moment?
More Kanye West, and I’m working on my own project.
How did you get signed to the G.O.O.D Music label?
I met Kanye through his cousin; he basically hooked me up and signed me with him.
What is it like working with a superstar like Kanye?
Life changing, in two words.
Theraflu (Way Too Cold), did you know it was going to be that crazy?
I heard it 30 minutes before the radio played it, and it went viral. You can always expect that though, when working with Kanye.
“Jay-Z Interview”, when can we expect that to come out?
Sometime next month.
How did Jay feel about the title? Has he heard the song yet?
He loved it!
G.O.O.D Music album, are you going to be on it?
I’m working on it, so we’ll see.
What came first, the microphone or Fruity Loops?
Both.
