It’s all family for Special Ed teacher John Duke

Having a son with special needs is the inspiration behind John Duke becoming a Special Education teacher here at Colton High School. He has been working at Colton High for ten years.

Duke grew up in Riverside, California, and attended Norte Vista High School, where he graduated in 1969. He is the oldest of three boys. His younger brothers are Michael and Phillip. Growing up Duke had a love for science and he wanted to be a scientist.

Duke’s first job was working at the Van Buren Drive-in in Riverside. He attended Riverside Community College for two years, where he earned his Associates of Art Degree. He then transferred to Cal State San Bernardino where he studied history and earned his Bachelor’s Degree; Duke also has a RSP credential.

Duke isn’t only about business, though; he also likes to have fun. He loves to play classical guitar every chance he gets. He enjoys listening to classical music, and watching his favorite movie, The Godfather. A rabid football fan, his favorite team is the Colts. His favorite food is lasagna. Duke’s biggest pet peeve is whining. He can’t stand to hear people whine about things.

Duke’s philosophy of teaching is simple: “Give students enough confidence so they take control of their lives.” His advice to students is to remember that “happiness is not a circumstance, it’s a choice, and if you set goals and move toward those goals, you will be happy in the pursuit.”
