1958 was a great year for the Colton High Pepper Bough. The publication earned multiple honors, including the rating of “All-American,” the highest rating given by the National Press Association. Additionally, the paper won the Gold Medalist First Place, International Honor Rating, Editorial Excellence in the USC Newspaper Contest, and three ribbons of distinction from the University of Redlands Newspaper Day in a Southern California competition.
Colton also had several students qualify for membership in Quill and Scroll, an honor society for journalists. At the time, reporters had to produce 250 printed inches of copy in the printed newspaper to be considered for the honor. In 1958, 42 Colton High students received this distinction.
