Colton High School opened in 1895. It is one of the oldest high schools in the Inland Empire. In this daily feature, we celebrate Colton High’s rich history.

We end our month of teacher celebrations by sharing this fun story from English teacher Vivian Shaw, who taught at Colton High School from 1983-1998.

The year is 1983. Dr. Rollin Grider is principal . . .

“My first year at Colton High I followed all the school rules to the letter. I know that the last thing I wanted to do was to incure the wrath of Mr. Grider. One of the cardinal rules for teachers is not to let students out of class early at any time. One day late in the school year I got the brilliant idea to reward my students 6th period and let them out two minutes before the bell rang. I no sooner let them out the door when Mr. Grider plants his formidable frame into my classroom and bellows out, ‘Mrs. Shaw, you are not to let students out of your classes before the bell rings.’ The one time I break the rules, I get nailed royally.”
