Colton High School opened in 1895. It is one of the oldest high schools in the Inland Empire. In this daily feature, we celebrate Colton High’s rich history.

In 2000, the Colton High School AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program was recognized as a national demonstration school. The adviser at the time was Mrs. Eileen Potterton, who started working at Colton High School in 1990 as an English and video productions teacher.

“I strongly believe in the students in the program,” Ms. Potterton told the Crimson & Gold in 2001. Besides inspiring students and working to support their collegiate futures, Ms. Potterton also professed a love for drag racing. “I used to drag race and slalom race my Corvette years ago,” she shared.

AVID is one of CHS’ longest running programs. Its focus is on creating a college-readiness and college going culture on campus. In the classroom, students who qualify for the program are given academic support via weekly tutoring sessions, provided opportunities to visit and learn more about colleges, and enjoy presentations by guest speakers who share their experiences and answer student questions.
