City of Colton

Pepper trees, like the ones seen in this image of the Carnegie Library on La Cadena Dr. (now the Colton Museum), were a feature of Colton’s landscaping.

Colton High School opened in 1895. It is one of the oldest high schools in the Inland Empire. In this daily feature, we celebrate Colton High’s rich history.

The Pepper Bough was named after pepper trees that used to grow on school grounds. They are fast-growing evergreen trees perfect for the arid climate of Colton. While they look similar to willow trees, when crushed, the leaves of the pepper tree have a distinct smell similar to the black pepper you can purchase in the supermarket.
