Movie Review – Hostel

Armando Pablo, Reporter

Have you ever wanted to travel the world and explore what each city, state and country has to offer? Well after this movie you probably won’t be traveling anywhere far and wide for a while. Hostel (2001) is about three friends backpacking across Europe seeking adventure and even someone to love. As they travel, Oli, Paxton, and Josh meet a man that tells them about a hostel in Slovakia – little do they know that they will find horror awaiting them. After enjoying their first few nights at the hostel, one by one they each go missing except one of them; the last one gets suspicious searching for his friends so he sets out in hopes of finding them but what he finds is extremely shocking.

Directors Eli Roth and Quentin Tarantino both brought such real life striking horror on the big screen. The cinematography of the land including overall scenery was very beautiful, the scenery distracts you from what is to come. I enjoyed the acting because sometimes the acting can really take you out of the illusion while watching the movie. Now let’s talk about special effects, AMAZING. The movie is very gruesome from beginning to end but it definitely has some of the best effects for the early years of horror movies. The visuals for the special effects of decapitations or “surgery procedures” were amazing. However, the film got mixed reviews, a lot of the negative reviews were saying that it seemed like Eli Roth was trying to get as far as he can go as a director to create a movie so gruesome and inappropriate without getting into trouble. On the other hand people were praising it for being a true “Screamer” because of the graphic violence. The other positive reviews were how Roth used a concept of real life horror and made it more terrifying than it needs to be. I personally think that the movie is great and probably wouldn’t watch it again because it definitely is a lot to take in at once but if you want to experience horror and disgust then Hostel is the movie for you.
