Movie Review – The Ritual
November 6, 2020
The Ritual was directed in 2019 and when released, the film won the Best Effect award and was nominated for other awards as well. The movie is about a group of friends that go hiking in the woods to a cabin that they rented out for the weekend. Unfortunately, one of the friends in the group was killed so the group goes to celebrate the anniversary of their friend’s death. However, trying to take a shortcut through the woods the route leads to horrific events.
The cinematography was outstanding and vivid. The director of landscapes made every scene feel unsettling and suspenseful. I really like how that was done because many thrillers and horror movies usually depend on pop ups to catch the views of guard or will build suspense with the sound track. The sound track of suspenseful music makes the movie even more unnerving to watch. It definitely added more tension to every scene even to the scene that had nothing going on.
The Plot twist and development was created in such a way that it wasn’t predictable because it was hidden in plain sight. I enjoyed this film very much, overall the film was an amazing cinematic piece that creates much suspense using its visuals, directing, and screenplay. I feel as these elements in film are good to have because it balances to film out from the regular jump scares and intense soundtrack that we are used to.
