In 2005, eighteen year old Kesha Rose was finally able to live out her dream by signing with top producer, Lukasz “Dr. Luke” Gottwald and Sony Music. If only she knew almost ten years later she’d be in a parade of disturbing lawsuits to be freed from her contract.

Singer- songwriter Kesha has claimed to had been drugged, sexually assaulted and emotionally abused by longtime producer Dr. Luke throughout her career. She has tried multiple times to find loopholes to be released from her contract through Sony Music, but has been denied the right of freedom.

Forced to work with her alledge abuser, She finally decided she had been through enough. On Friday, February 19, the twenty eight year old took Luke to New York’s Supreme Court in hope that the judge would favor her to be released from her contract with Luke. During the case, Kesha sat at the back of the courtroom with her mother and boyfriend, witnessing Sony and Luke’s lawyers battling it out with her own. Luke’s lawyer, Christine Lepera quickly denied the allegations made against him and told PEOPLE Magazine “Kesha and her mother are engaged in a campaign of publishing outrageous and untrue statements about Dr. Luke to third parties, including scurrilous and false statements of purported physical and mental abuse of Kesha.”

Kesha’s lawyers countered, “Your major issue is your client is saying she cannot with Mr. Gottwald. Reading these papers, I notice that Sony and [Dr. Luke’s record label] Kemosabe Records say they don’t care if Gottwald has anything to do with anything with the recording,” Then the judge replied to  attorney, Mark Geragos. “They are willing to allow her to record without any involvement of Mr. Gottwald … and there are papers from Mr. Gottwald that say he will agree to allow her to record without his involvement … She doesn’t have to work with him.”

However, Supreme Court Justice Shirley Kornreich had denied Kesha an injunction -which would have allowed her to break from her contract with Gottwald and work under Sony without Gottwald-  because reportingly, there has not been enough evidence provided for the case. Supreme Court Justice Kornreich has not come to a final ruling.

Kesha’s contract states she is required to release another six album’s through Luke’s record company and The Week expresses “…which could tie her to Gottwald’s company for another 12 years.”

After the denial of her injunction, Kesha had to excuse herself from the room after breaking down in tears.

Kesha still gains support all over social media and with many big stars such as Adele, Demi Lovato, and Taylor Swift. During the 2016 Brit Awards, Adele said “I would also like to take this moment to publicly support Kesha.” Keep in mind, many of the performers, award recipients and guests are also under contract with Sony Music, including Adele.

#FreeKesha trended all over social media after the judge denied her injunction with many fans and supporters outraged. Kesha’s suit with Luke is far from over, and many fans, supporters, and friends hope she gains the justice she deserves.
