Exhilaration and heart break surrounds everyone’s first love, and whether or not it ends in complete happiness or a complete disaster, the love leaves a mark on your heart. The movie “Like Crazy” reminds us of our heart’s innocence and bliss before it went through the trials and tribulations that come with love. “Like Crazy” won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival and was written and directed by Drake Doremus. The movie is about two college students, Jacob (Anton Yelchin) and Anna (Felicity Jones), who fall in love with each other, but their relationship is put to the test when Anna gets deported from Los Angeles to London and embarks on a long, emotional journey. The movie does an excellent job at showing the challenges the couple faces being together, yet physically apart. “Like Crazy” isn’t your typical love story in the sense that instead of showing you what happened, it shows you how it feels to be in a relationship with hardships and heartbreak.
Doremus went a unique direction with the cinematography by shooting the movie entirely though a hand held camera, giving a more intimate view of Jacob and Anna’s relationship. The audience gets to see the small details and gestures we normally wouldn’t see through the conventional movie camera. “Like Crazy” gives you a look into Jacob and Anna’s raw, intense, messy and beautiful relationship. Overall, the movie does a good job of giving insight on what people might have to deal with in real-life situations. Whether you love or hate the movie will depend on your view on love, but watching it will bring back the bittersweet memories of your first love and remembering how innocent it all once use to be.
