Rise Records has taken a chance and signed a new band; a hardcore outfit hailing from Columbus, Ohio, by the name of Like Moths to Flames. After just one EP, the five-piece released their first full-length album, entitled When We Don’t Exist, on November 8th.
The album starts off with an ominous, darkly theatrical mix, which transitions into the first fast-paced angst anthem: “The Worst In Me”. This metal-driven style continues throughout the next few songs on the album, alternating with a somewhat alt-rock feel (most evident in the songs “You Won’t Be Missed” and “My Own Grave”), as the album progresses.
Unfortunately, Like Moths to Flames bring no originality to the hardcore scene. There is basically a checklist they go through throughout the album; group vocals, predictable breakdowns, and alternation of screams and singing. Chris Roetter does, however, possess the appreciated ability to perform both clean and unclean vocals. However, unlike label-mates Of Mice & Men and Memphis May Fire, who were able to bring a revamped sound to their resumes, When We Don’t Exist brings nothing to the table that hasn’t already been heard in the scene.
Catch Like Moths to Flames, along with Winds of Plague, Chelsea Grin and more, out on the Trash and Burn tour, now.
