Rialto, CA—The Yellowjacket flag football season is officially over. With a trip to the CIF playoffs on the line, the team came apart in the second half against Fontana, losing 24-6 to the Steelers.
Despite two key players out of the lineup for the game, the Yellowjackets came into the game with confidence. In their previous meeting with Fontana, they lost 6-0, but since their offensive attack has improved, and their man defense as well.
That was on display in the first half, as freshman Alayna Robinson got Colton off to a hot start with a 46-yard rushing touchdown, putting Colton up 6-0. The second quarter saw the two teams trading punts, as Colton kept the Steelers from passing midfield.
Everything changed in the second half. Fontana led off with a kickoff return for a touchdown, and after that, Colton seemed to unravel. Freshman quarterback Myiah Quezada threw three interceptions, and the Yellowjacket defense struggled to stop Fontana’s run game.
Colton finishes their first season 2-14 with a fourth place finish in the San Andreas league.
Now, they look forward to an offseason in which they can prepare for next season, improving their game and skill sets.
For nearly all of the players on the team, this is their first year ever playing organized flag football; this was not entirely true for their competition, many of whom had experience in either high school or on club teams.
