Menifee & Riverside, CA—Colton Volleyball stayed consistent last week, going 1-1 on the week with a loss to Heritage High 3-1, and a 3-0 win against Rubidoux.
Colton improved on the season tp a 4-6 record, a clear show of the Yellowjacket spirit to win. JV also stepped up and took victories in both of their games.
Volleyball vs. Rubidoux – Sep. 4
Last year Colton lost 0-3 to Rubidoux High, but they turned it around this time, taking the victory. Players like Jayla McCarthy, Haley Barrera, and Kayla Barajas were consistent with shots and accuracy and played a large part in set one’s clean 25-16 score.
The second set was consistent in scoring, but minor communication issues shook up Colton. Despite this, Colton held strong and won the second set 25-20. The third set was similar with a very close 25-23 victory, which led to a total triumph of the tenth game of the season.
“It’s good that they could see that they can adjust, and that they need to adjust,” head coach Blanca Ascensio shared after the game. “Reading the other team” also helped with the team’s victory.
Kayla Barajas was brimming with Yellowjacket pride. “I’m very proud of all the girls, JV and Varsity,” she said. “We showed up and played as best as we played.”
“I feel like I played really good” Haley Barrera said. “I feel like I did good work to help the team today.”
Volleyball vs. Heritage – Sep. 2
Despite injury and a loss, Volleyball gave it their all in Tuesday’s game against Heritage High.
Colton’s players Violet Palma, and Haley Barrera both sustained injuries against Heritage, which severely affected the team’s performance.
The first set was a tough battle. Colton took an early lead, but struggled to hold it, falling short 21-25. They bounced back strong in the second set, taking it 25-17.
Notably, the team worked hard to overpower the Patriots despite the loss of their Libero.
Unfortunately without a full team, Colton lost focus and communication, dropping the third set 13-25. In a last-stand effort, Volleyball fought with all could, but could not re-obtain focus and energy, and lost the game to Heritage High.
With another 1-1 week, Colton is steady, and on Sep. 9, will duke it out at Tahquitz’s Gym at 5:15 p.m.
Note: JV cleared the floors 2-0 against Rubidoux Falcons, and 2-1 against the Heritage High Patriots.
