Colton & San Bernardino, CA—Last week turned out to be an even week for the Yellowjackets as they went 1-1, sweeping Indian Springs 3-0 on Friday, Aug. 29 but losing to San Gorgonio 3-0 on Wednesday, Aug. 27.
The victory against Indian Springs is Colton’s third of the season, matching their win total through eight games for the first time since the 2022 season.
The game against Indian Springs was all about great teamwork and a fighting spirit, as Colton held off the feisty Coyotes in three straight sets. In the first set Andrea Llanes hit three consecutive aces to fuel the Yellowjackets 25-23 win.
In the second, Violet Palma and Krysta Robledo racked up the saves and digs as Colton dominated 25-16. And Jocelyn Ornelas and Adrianna Silva put the spike down in the third set with their sets and attacks, finishing off Indian Springs for the victory.
“We really wanted to win, so we put our all,” Silva said, “I feel like I was helping bring the energy up, and I helped get, like, get a few points and get some assists and their hits. So I feel like that helps a lot.”
Jocelyn Ornelas summed up the win. “It wasn’t just a one person thing. It’s a team effort.”
While the game against Indian Springs put another notch in their win column, on Wednesday, Colton struggled against San Gorgonio, losing 3-0 in straight sets.
Colton came into the game on the second night of a back-to-back, having playing a tough five set match against Montclair on Tuesday. San Gorgonio arrived with a record of 8-2 and with ambitions to repeat as league champions after winning last year’s Skyline league title with Junior outside hitter Ariana Serra returning after winning league MVP last year.
The first set was evenly-paced, with Lorelai Hurley attentive and following through with her strong assists. It was clear Colton fought hard, but the Spartans ended up taking the set 18-25.
The Yellowjackets lost the second set 21-25 despite many accurate hits. In the third set, the fatigue set in and Colton got blown out 12-25.
With the 1-1 week, Colton is now 3-5 on the season with four more games to play before their league schedule opens against Carter on Sep. 11.
Today Colton is back on the court, facing Heritage High in the Hubbs. Game time is 5:15 p.m.
Note: JV won 2-0 against the San Gorgonio Spartans, lost 0-2 to Indian Spring Coyotes.
