Colton, CA—Colton suffered a loss, 2-3, to the Montclair Cavaliers on Tuesday night. Last year the Cavaliers beat the Yellowjackets 3-0 at Montclair’s gym, but this Yellowjackets team is not the same one that played Montclair a year ago.
This was a very close, hard-fought match. After losing the first two sets, Colton fought their way back and pushed Montclair to a decisive fifth set, falling just two points short of their third victory of the season.
In the first set, the two teams went back-and-forth. A couple serves were too strong, leading to points on errors, but Colton’s improvements in setting up their hitters was notable. The Yellowjackets pushed the set to extra points, but lost 25-27.
Montclair looked primed to win the match outright in the second set, which they took 20-25. However, Yellowjacket players like Charlene Hernandez and Jocelyn Ornelas began making an impact on defense, picking up timely blocks. Still, the team was undone by challenges with communication and gave up the set 20-25.
For the Yellowjackets, the third set proved to be a turning point. They came out focused and put together one of their best efforts of the season, winning 25-8.
With constant high energy and lots of consistent teamwork, the Yellowjackets continue their roll and took the fourth set 25-15. The tide had turned, and they looked like they figured the Cavaliers out.
The fifth and final set was one filled with pure focus and limit-pushing on both sides. Due to lots of buildup of strain and loss of energy, Montclair took the win, 15-13.
Colton is now 2-4, but have no time to worry about this loss because today they take on the San Gorgonio Spartans at 5:15 pm.
Note: JV lost 0-2 against the Montclair Cavaliers.
