Last week was a busy week for the Yellowjackets track and field team, who opened their 2024-2025 season with two meets in two days.
It was a rainy opening day for the team on Mar. 6. They traveled to Ontario High, running and throwing and jumping in a downpour. CIF rules require track and field events to take place during inclement weather, unless thunder and lightning are occurring.
Ontario won both boys and girls team competitions. The final score for the varsity boys was 29-89 and the girls finished 27-90.
Despite the losses, several individuals performed very well to start the season.
In the girls varsity 800, Diana Ruvlacaba picked up where she left off with her CIF qualifying Cross Country season, taking first place with a time of 2:45.29. Koa Regaldo took first place in the boys varsity 400, finishing in 53.83 seconds.
Arianna Aispuro had an excellent day in the 100 hurdles, placing second with a time of 17.57.
In the girls varsity 1600, Destiny Hidalgo placed fourth for Colton with a time of 7:03.80, just ahead of Salome Gonzalez, who came in fifth at 7:05.81.
For the field team, Ricky Barnes Jr. placed first in the boys varsity long jump with a distance of 17 feet, seven-and-a-half inches.
Izabella Oliver took third place in shot put with a distance of 25 feet, two inches. In the varsity boys discus, Christopher Acero threw 87 feet, 6 inches, good for second place.
The second meet of the week was the Sparta Relay at San Gorgonio High School on Saturday, Mar. 8. This invitational involved 10 teams from the Inland Empire, facing off against each other in relay action, including field events.
The boys 800 relay team—Christopher Arevalos, Kalvin Leon, Jonathan Quirroz and Abel Lopez—was the most successful, taking second place with a time of 1:50.08, just behind Arroyo Valley at 1:49.12.
In the long jump, the team did not place, but Barnes set a new personal record with a distance of 17 feet, eight inches
Now the team will be on the road at Bloomington this Thursday, Mar. 13.
