Colton, CA—President’s Day set the stage for opening day of the 2025 baseball season. After finishing their 2024 campaign 15-9-1, and exiting the CIF playoffs after a first round loss to the Rialto Knights, the Yellowjackets returned to the field looking to improve 1% better every day and go further into the playoffs.
The year did not begin as the Yellowjackets hoped, however, with a 5-2 loss to Patriot High. A rough first inning, in which the team gave up three runs, set the tone and despite their best efforts, it was a hole out of which they could not climb.
Steven Aguayo had a strong performance for the Yellowjackets, going 2-for-4 with two doubles. He hit a monster double to kick off the third inning. Evan Darrington also went 2-for-4, knocking in Aguayo for the team’s first run of the season with a single to right field. Other notable performers were Donavin Bobadilla and Jesse Ruiz, who both hit 2-for-3.
On the mound, Jesse Ruiz recovered from the rocky first inning to pitch a complete game. Of the five runs scored by Patriot, only one was earned, giving him a night in which he gave up 6 hits. He also finished with two strikeouts.
In keeping with a tradition established last season, the opening day first pitch was thrown by Colton community legend Tommy Leon.
Colton gets an opportunity to even its record today against Rim of the World. Game time is 3:15 p.m. at the baseball stadium.
