Colton, CA—Boys basketball season is coming to an end, and on Wednesday night they celebrated their seniors at the annual Senior Night event.
The boys are currently 3-1 and first place in the Skyline league, hoping to claim the league title next week. Overall, they are 11-8 with two more games to play.
On Wednesday, the Yellowjackets took on the Arroyo Valley Hawks for the first time this season, winning 64-48. Both teams went back-and-forth, but the Hawks couldn’t escape the Yellowjacket’s constant pressure.
Although the Yellowjackets didn’t have many problems, “I feel like we could have been a lot better on the court, we were a little sloppy,” said head coach Kendrick Ayres after the game.
Despite the little struggles, the basketball coach was happy to be able to put on a great Senior Night for his players, several who have been a part of the program since their freshman years.
Ryan Sanchez had an outstanding performance during the second quarter with a couple of three pointers to help lead the team to victory. “I feel happy, you feel me?” he said.
Many other players had great games, Isaiah Stewart made extremely tough plays, fighting through defensive schemes, and showcasing his dribbling skills, Gonzalo Oropeza had explosive shooting, unlimited passing, and big game plays that had a part in his team’s victory.
“I felt blessed. Being this good at basketball makes things easy,” Oropeza said, “We should win the league. Ourselves are the only people who can stop us from achieving that.”
Colton has one week left in the regular season. Tonight, Jan. 24 they travel to San Bernardino to play San Gorgonio High. Next week, they finish the season on Wednesday at Arroyo Valley. Skyline league tournament play begins on Feb. 3.
