Colton, CA—After wrecking Fontana’s Homecoming last week, Colton had its own Homecoming this week against Arroyo Valley. Unlike the Steelers, the Yellowjackets made sure to remain undefeated on their home field, crushing the Hawks 54-33.
In what has become a weekly highlight, Colton quarterback Koa Regalado had another outstanding performance, passing for 283 yards and three touchdowns. The phenom also ran for 128 yards and three touchdowns, including a 66-yard burst to put the Yellowjackets on the board on their first possession.
“I love Colton, how they do Homecoming. It’s awesome to play in front of this atmosphere,” the quarterback said post-game.
However, Regalado was not the only Yellowjacket who found the endzone on Thursday. Damian Sanchez, Regalado’s partner in the backfield, rushed for 76 yards and received two touchdowns.
Sanchez, who had a frustrating performance against Fontana, tried something different against Arroyo Valley. Inspired by Boise State’s Ashton Jeanty, Sanchez worked on a new stance in the backfield. “I’m telling you, that stance changed me,” he said.
Despite the high scoring game, in which Colton scored eight touchdowns, the coaching staff still focused on areas of improvement.
“Ball security, ball security. Ball security’s our biggest thing,” said head coach Ray Rodriguez. “It was a good win, but we gotta stay locked in.”
The offense came out blazing to start the game, but defense struggled. The teams traded touchdowns through most of the first quarter, with the Yellowjackets struggling to stop the Hawks’ run game.
In the second quarter, the Yellowjackets began to pull away as the defense began to get a handle on the Hawks’ attack. They went into the half ahead 41-21, with Regalado hitting Kalvin Leon for a 65-yard touchdown pass.
The Yellowjackets kept racking up points in the second half. During the third quarter, Regaldo found Julian Gonzalez for a 54-yard touchdown.
The Yellowjackets will now be traveling to Bloomington High school on Oct.18, who are currently 1-1 in league. Game time is at 7pm.
