Fontana, CA—After a tough week in which heat and air quality advisories had the team practicing indoors at the Hubbs Gym, the Colton Yellowjackets fought through the rust and miscues to wreck Fontana High’s homecoming games, defeating the Steelers 26-19.
“The boys played a complete game all night long and showed a lot of grit,” said head coach Ray Rodriguez. “The story of our boys, of our team, it’s great. I feel like they’ve shown it every single week with the adversities that we’ve had to deal with.”
The highlight of the game came late in the second quarter, Colton up 7-6, when quarterback Koa Regalado took off out of the pocket on a broken play and rushed downfield for a 79-yard touchdown.
“Oh man, I just saw the safety take a bad angle, and if you take a bad angle on me, you’re gonna regret it,” Regalado said.
Fontana struggled with the sophomore quarterback all game. While they managed to force his worst completion rate of the season (14-for-28), he still threw for 209 yards and rushed for 123 yards. His favored target of the night was receiver Kalvin Leon, who caught seven passes for 127 yards and three touchdowns, including a 59-yard bomb to kick off the fourth quarter that put the game out of reach for the Steelers.
On the defensive end, the Yellowjackets held the Steelers run game in check for most of the night, with linebacker Mateo Barboza showing off his ball instincts by racking up five tackles. The Steelers still managed to put together two strong drives. Led by senior running back Rashawn Williams, who rushed for 116 yards, the Steelers cut the lead to 26-19 with just over four minutes left on the game clock.
The Yellowjackets held tight on their final possession, stretching the clock to keep the Steelers off the field.
With this victory, Colton is now 4-1 on the season and 1-0 in league. Fontana is 3-3 and 0-1 in league play.
Next Thursday, Colton plays their homecoming game against Arroyo Valley. Game time is 7 p.m. at Memorial Stadium. The annual Colton Homecoming Parade will take place before the game at 5 p.m. along Rancho Ave.
Skyline League Notes
Bloomington (3-3, 1-0) def. Arroyo Valley (1-5, 0-1), 43-20
A competitive first half took a turn late in the second quarter when a fumble by Arroyo Valley set up a 32-yard rushing touchdown by Bloomington’s Nicholas Seventy put the Bruins up 22-14. Arroyo closed the gap on Tyrane Thomas’ 82-yard rushing touchdown, but that would do it for the Hawks, who couldn’t find the endzone again against a tough Bruins defense.
Carter (3-2, 1-0) def. Notre Dame (0-6, 0-1), 58-0
After running back Jordan McKinney’s 29-yard touchdown, Carter never looked back. The Lions scored 38 points in the first quarter, ensuring that Notre Dame remained winless on the season.
