Volleyball is back and better than ever. The Yellowjackets are on the attack this season after both varsity and JV swept Citrus Hill 3-0 in straight sets, showing great teamwork and communication.
The varsity team has changed up a bit this season, adding a new JV coach, new varsity team captains and several new players.
Varsity captain Alejandra Primera shared, “After last year, coming from a losing streak, this year we are coming back better than ever.”
New Coach
The biggest change this new season was hiring a new JV coach, Joleena Silberman.
Being an alumni and still playing the sport today, she is happy to be back and bring home a winning season for the Yellowjackets.
As a former player and coach, Silberman knows the struggles and the kind of effort the players need to put into the game to accomplish their goals.
“She is a very good coach and a very good person,” said junior player Jocelyn Ornelas. “She does her job and is good at it.”
New Captains
Last year, the volleyball team did not have captains. Every week, coaches would select a new captain based on a number of factors, from performance to kindness.
This year, that’s in the past. Coach Blanca Ascencio named team captains this week.
The new captains are Alejandra Primera and Kiara Verdin.
Primera says, “It’s better because our whole team looks up to two players for inspiration, and that is what we both strive to do.”
New Players
After only winning a single game last season, there are doubts surrounding this team. These doubts seem to have changed the aspect of pushing hard to train and win.
But the team has added several new players, including girls soccer stars Tiffany Abril and Cambria Duron. They join experienced veterans, like Jayda Porter and Natalie Caldera in the lineup. So far, they have impressed with their athleticism and attitude.
This has all created a new vibe for the lady Yellowjackets. They are renewed and positive about the season ahead. And all of that was on display on court against Citrus Hill. They have already matched their win total from last season. It’s a great start to this new journey.
