Tennis falters in CIF wild card match

Yellowjackets lose 15-3 to the Northview Vikings for a spot in the Division 5 CIF playoffs; 4 players qualify for the CIF individual championships

Boys tennis faced off against Northview on May 3, losing 15-3 in the CIF Wild Card match.

Colton, CA—After coming in second place in the Skyline league this season, the Yellowjackets took to their home court against Northview High from Covina yesterday in the CIF Division 5 Wild Card match, the winner looking for the chance to advance as a team to the CIF playoffs.

The Vikings won the match 15-3, putting an end to Colton’s season in team competition. 

“They found a little extra in them,” Yellowjacket head coach Omar Menjivar said about the visiting Vikings.

The loss had team captain Ja’len Terry stunned. “This was a different level,” he said. “But we’re still playing hard.”

The highlight of the match was the play of junior Adrian Colunga, who continues to have an unbeaten season, winning all three matches he played yesterday.

Despite the loss, the Colton’s top players qualified to participate in the CIF individual Championships on May 18. Qualifying players include Adrian Colunga, Anthony Castellanos, Christopher Lopez, and Xavier Rocha.

According to Menjivar, the last Colton men’s tennis team to have players advance to the CIF playoffs was in 2016.
