Colton, CA—The Hubbs Gym was raucous last night as Colton High faced off in its final home wrestling meet of the season against Rim of the World’s Flying Scots. Several Yellowjackets posted big wins, but ultimately the more experienced Scots won the meet, 48-33.

In addition to the meet, wrestling celebrated its Seniors in a Senior Night celebration. Eleven Yellowjackets were honored, escorted onto the Hubbs floor by family and friends to receive flowers, and pose for photos as Athletic Director Michael Reh shared fun information about each.

Seniors honored were: Andrew Alvarez, Myles Garza, Jonathan Hernandez, Eddie Marquez, Daniel Montes, team manager Layla Negrete, Ricardo Ochoa, Jose Ramirez, Ashton Russell, Abeal Sanchez, and Mark Venegas.

On the mat, notable victories went to Elias Velasquez, who won by decision in his 106-lb. match against Rim’s Jack Espinoza. The freshman was excited by his third win of the season.

Eddie Marquez pinned his opponent from Rim in the second period of their 126-lb. match, which led to some controversy as the Scot’s head coach believed the pin came via an illegal move by Marquez. The official ruled in Colton’s favor, giving Marquez the win.

“I had a lot of practice leading up to this,” Marquez said. “I came in confident.”

In addition to Marquez and Velasquez, pins were also achieved by Aidan Arroyo (120-lb.), Jose Ramirez (132-lb.), Daniel Montes (152-lb.), and Santino Zamora (220-lb.). After his victory, Arroyo stood proud in front of the crowd, flexing his muscles. “I just worked with the flow,” Arroyo said.

Coach Andrew Castro was proud of his boys and their efforts in this match. “We fought hard tonight,” he said.

Colton’s season continues on Jan. 26 when they travel to Bloomington High for their annual showdown against the Bruins.
