Boys soccer dominates Upland in first home game
Yahir Rodriguez and Julio Soberanes score goals in Colton’s 3-1 victory
Colton, CA—The 2022-23 boys soccer season has been going on for three weeks, and finally Colton played a home game on Wednesday night against the Upland Scots. But as we’ve seen in those three weeks, Colton sent the Scots home with a loss, winning 3-1.
Colton made quick work of getting on the scoreboard as Yahir Rodriguez scored on an assist from Julio Soberanes at the 5th minute of the first half. Upland scored with 10 minutes left in the first half to tie the game at 1-1.
With a minute and a half remaining in the first half, Rodriguez scored the Yellowjackets’ second goal on a chilena kick that the defense did not see coming. Colton went into the half up 2-1.
Colton completely dominated ball possession in the second half. Soberanes put the game out of reach when he made the score 3-1 early on a rebound header. Goalkeeper Ulises Castillo-Rivera made sure in the rare moments when the Scots attacked that they couldn’t kick the ball through the net. He finished the game with 7 saves.
Soberanes is excited about where his team is headed. “As a unit we all did good and continued to work hard,” he said. “The chemistry is good and we’re looking pretty good.”
After the game, head coach Jose Ruvalcaba shared that he was proud of his team’s early progress and believes they are only going to get better.
With this victory, the Yellowjackets are now 6-1-1 on the season. They will continue their home stand this Friday night against Arroyo Valley in a non-league matchup. Game time is 5:30 p.m. at Memorial Stadium.
