Whole team ‘steps up’ in blowout victory over Arlington
Three Yellowjackets put up double digit scoring numbers as Colton improves to 8-3 on the season with a 57-23 win
Colton, CA—With a balanced scoring attack featuring 3 players in double figures, the Lady Yellowjackets tore into the Arlington Lions on Monday night for a 57-23 victory in front of the home crowd at Hubbs Gym.
Colton was led by Desiree Cadena, who put up a career high 21 points against the Lions. Savannah Govea scored 16 points with 13 steals, and Lia Tovar filled the stat sheet with 11 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists, and 4 steals.
“We needed everyone else to learn that they have to step up,” head coach Keisha Young said, referring to the fact that sophomore superstar Savannah Govea has been dominating the stat sheet with her point production. “Last year we only scored with one player the majority of the time and we can’t do that again.”
So after Colton took a sizable 20-7 advantage at the end of the first quarter in which Govea put up 11 points and 10 steals, she was shelved for most of the second quarter to give other players a chance to shine.
Desiree Cadena heeded the call and went to work, scoring 17 first half points on 10 shots. During the start of the second quarter, Cadena knocked down 4 shots in five possessions, including two 3-pointers that put Colton up 33-9 and put the game out of reach for the Lions.
“They were just leaving me open and I had to take the shot,” Cadena said about her incredible shooting night.
However, there were signs of slippage for the Yellowjackets. They struggled on the backboards, only raking in 28 rebounds as a team, despite a number of missed shots by Arlington.
On December 7, the Lady Yellowjackets travel to Pacific High to play the Pirates. There are two games remaining on the schedule before league play kicks off against the 5-2 San Gorgonio Spartans on December 14.
